Years of Existence

✝ Serving Humanity, Guided by Faith

Our Institute in the
Contemporary World

Our vocation demands that we become intimately united with God our Father, linked with humankind and its history, with its joys and hopes, grief and anxieties (GS1). “The world calls for and expects from us simplicity of life, the spirit of prayer, charity towards all, especially towards the lowly and the poor, obedience and humility, detachment and self-sacrifice. Without this mark of holiness, our words will have difficulty in touching the hearts of modern men and women” (EN 76). For an effective apostolic commitment, we remain open to the cultural values of the people we serve (C 5).

dots Our History
The Legacy of the Sisters of Mary Immaculate

The Catechist Sisters of Mary Immaculate Help of Christians (SMI) were founded on December 12, 1948, in Krishnagar, India, by Bishop Louis LaRavoire Morrow, S.D.B. Inspired by his “burning thirst for souls,” Bishop Morrow envisioned a congregation of women religious who would dedicate their lives to spreading God’s love through catechesis, service, and compassionate outreach.

From the very beginning, the SMI sisters committed themselves to pastoral care, education, and healthcare, reaching out especially to the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. With deep faith and dedication, they opened schools, dispensaries, and centers for social development, helping to uplift communities and strengthen the Church’s mission.

Over the decades, the congregation grew beyond its humble beginnings in Krishnagar. Today, the SMI sisters are present not only across India but also in Africa, Europe, and the United States, carrying forward their mission of love, service, and evangelization.

What started as a small seed of faith in 1948 has now blossomed into a global mission, touching countless lives through the guiding motto:
“To love God and help others to love God.”
